Most people who ask us this do qualify, and the ones who don't usually want to know why rather than be told to fill out a form and wait. So here's what the guidelines actually say, what a provider is looking at on your visit, and the situations where the answer is no or not yet.
You have to be 18 or older and physically located in Florida · nothing is prescribed without a medical evaluation

The weekly GLP-1 medications are approved for weight management in adults at a body mass index of 30 or higher, or at a body mass index of 27 or higher if you also have a weight related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea or cardiovascular disease. That's the starting framework, and it's a framework rather than a gate, because your provider is treating you and not a number.
If your body mass index is 30 or above and you're 18 or over, you're in the group these medications were studied in and approved for.
At 27 or above with at least one weight related condition, you're also inside the approved use, and plenty of our patients are here rather than at 30.
If you don't know your body mass index, it's your weight and your height run through a formula and your provider will work it out on the visit. You don't need to calculate anything before you talk to us.
This is the single most common question we get and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales one. If you're at a body mass index under 27 and you want to lose fifteen or twenty pounds for how you look, a weekly GLP-1 is not what those medications are approved for and we're not going to prescribe one for that.
What we will do is tell you the truth about it on the visit, and there are usually real options. For some people the daily pill option is an appropriate short course under supervision. For some people the actual problem turns out to be thyroid, or hormones, or a medication they're already on, and that's a blood work conversation rather than a weight loss one. And for some people the honest answer is that nutrition and resistance training will get them there and a prescription wouldn't, and we'd rather say that and lose the sale than put you on something you don't need.
If you book a visit and it turns out we can't help you, you aren't paying for a program you can't use.
Some of these are absolute and some of them just mean your provider needs more information before deciding, but all of them are worth knowing before you book so nothing comes as a surprise on the call.
Type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes on insulin, significant kidney or liver disease, gallbladder disease and a history of thyroid nodules all land in the category of your provider needs to look closely rather than automatically no. Bring your records and your medication list and let them make the call.
The visit isn't an interrogation and it isn't a formality either. Your provider has about thirty minutes and a real decision to make, and these are the things they're working through while you talk.
Fill this out and we will text you back today, usually within a couple of hours. Nothing to pay here.
If you're 18 or over, physically located in Florida, and your body mass index is 30 or higher, you're in the group these medications are approved for. You also usually qualify at a body mass index of 27 or higher if you have a weight related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or sleep apnea. A licensed Florida provider makes the final call on a video visit.
The approved use is a body mass index of 30 or above, or 27 or above with at least one weight related condition. You don't need to have failed a diet first and you don't need a referral.
If your body mass index is under 27, a weekly GLP-1 isn't what it's approved for and we won't prescribe one for that. There are often other real options, including a supervised course of the oral appetite suppression medication, or blood work to find out whether thyroid or hormones are the actual problem. If we can't help you, you won't be paying for a program.
Anyone under 18, anyone pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, and anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to the medication. A history of pancreatitis, an active or recent eating disorder, and conditions like gastroparesis all need a careful look and are often a no.
No. You don't need a referral and you don't need a prior diagnosis. You need to be an adult in Florida and you need a medical evaluation with a licensed provider, which is the video visit.
Not to qualify. Your provider decides on the visit whether baseline labs make sense for you, based on your history and what you're starting on, and recent labs from your own doctor can often be used instead.
You have to be 18 or over. There's no upper age limit, though your provider will look more closely at kidney function, other medications and fall risk in older patients.
No. Our providers are licensed in Florida and you need to be physically located in Florida at the time of your telehealth visit. That's a licensing requirement rather than a preference.
That often makes you a better candidate rather than a worse one, and it's one of the conditions that qualifies you at a lower body mass index. If you're on insulin or a sulfonylurea your provider needs to look closely at your regimen first, because doses often have to change.
